During the era of segregation, water fountains were a symbol of racial division. Back then, public water fountains were labeled “Whites Only” or “Coloreds Only.” Unfortunately, Asians were not considered either Black or White during the period, which led to confusion about which fountain they could use. In this article, we will discuss which water fountains Asians were allowed to drink from during segregation.
During segregation, Asians faced many challenges due to their racial identities, including difficulties with public facilities such as restrooms and water fountains. Like other non-Black minorities, Asians did not have a designated “colored” fountain or a “whites only” option. Instead, they were often left to guess which fountain to use. Sometimes, they were forced to use the same water fountain as the Black community, which led to racial conflicts and tensions.
However, some private establishments, such as department stores, restaurants, and gas stations, would grant Asians access to their facilities, including water fountains. They did not discriminate against Asians, unlike the policy enforced by the government.
Moreover, some cities, such as San Francisco, had their own ordinances that specifically segregated Asians from the White community. In the early 1900s, Chinese people were not allowed to use public restrooms or drink from public water fountains, leading to several health issues. However, in 1906, a new city ordinance allowed Chinese people to have their water fountains. The fountain was called the “Oriental Public Drinking Fountain” and was located at one of the major streets in Chinatown. It was designed by architect Willis Polk, who added an ornamental dragon as a symbol of the Chinese people.
In conclusion, during segregation, Asians faced challenges with public facilities. However, some private establishments granted them access to their facilities, while some cities had their own ordinances specifically segregating Asians. In the early 1900s, San Francisco had an Oriental Public Drinking Fountain designed for the Chinese people that added a touch of pride to their community. Racial issues have come a long way since then, and we now have nondiscriminatory water fountains available to all.
